High-performance, user-friendly personal computers (PCs) and PC-LANs which connect these computers have become widespread. In response to this, Hitachi has developed the personal multimedia communications systems, which advance the role of PCs one step further, transforming it from a computing tool to a personal intelligent communications tool. Personal multimedia communication systems provide various communications functions to support the various situations that occur every day in a company. These include voice communications over LAN, screen sharing dialogs (conferral), a voice mail messaging service for absent parties, voice annotation using synchronous multimedia technology, and functions such as interconnection between existing telephones and LAN telephones through the private branch exchange (PBX) gateway. Personal multimedia communication systems unify both the real-time telephone call function on the LAN and the multimedia voice mail function on the personal computer, thus transforming the PC into a powerful communications tool. Personal multimedia commun ication systems also support computer telephony by enabling real-time voice communications through the computer.
