From humble origins in Clausthal, Germany, Gustav Thureau became the first Tasmanian Inspector of Mines and Government Mining Geologist. Following technical education in Germany, he qualified himself for these offices by working as a miner, mining agent, mine manager, lecturer, mining inspector, mining reporter and mining consultant in Germany, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and America. A number of controversies surround his remarkable career of over fifty years.
