The marine salt option

Local authorities and term maintenance contractors alike are coming under ever increasing pressure to de-ice effectively and efficiently. This pressure is both economic and environmental. Recent changes introduced into the de-icing community to assist practitioners include the reduction in salt grading from a 10mm coarse grade to a 6mm fine grade material being required. This change has also been supplemented by a number of local authority's trialling the pre-wetted de-icing technique. This involves dry 6mm or 3mm salt, in some instances containing moisture levels no greater than 0.5%, being sprayed with a brine solution, manufactured at the depot, as the salt leaves the back of a gritter.
