Highway maintenance services including repairs to carriageway and footway defects in the north London borough of Enfield are being delivered by maintenance crews driving a vehicle that does not release any carbon into the atmosphere. The zero emission 3.5t truck is powered by an electric motor and is thought to be the first such vehicle to be operating in the highways maintenance sector in the UK. Enfield council's highways services partner Fitzpatrick is confident that the new vehicle will deliver substantial environmental benefits. "We have calculated that just one of these electric vehicles operating on the council's roads will reduce carbon output by 4t in a year, but this is just the start," says Fitzpatrick's project manager Steve Woolf. "We operate a fleet of 22 vehicles in the borough and if this trial proves to be successful, we could soon replace some of our larger 7.5t trucks with electric powered versions as well."
