Potholes have been the scourge of British highways since pre-Roman times. Whilst highway designs thankfully have improved dramatically since then, and the cost of highways per user have massively reduced, defects in our carriageways and footways are increasingly becoming a problem with the public sector doubly challenged with reduced budgets and increased demands on their resources. Dave Gaster, director of Support Services Direct, looks at the issue Potholes are hitting the national headlines with the stark revelation that there is 'a pothole for every mile of the UK', and not only that but that they are costing us dearly with 'a 79 per cent increase in compensation claims'.
