At night the retro-reflecting ability of road markings assists drivers in understanding the shape of the road ahead, identifying lane delineation and the presence and layout of junctions, and providing warning of potential hazards. It is therefore an important contributor to safe journeys on the road network. On highly trafficked sections road lighting may be used to provide additional assistance to the driver. However, with a desire to reduce light pollution and energy consumption, many lighting schemes are now being considered for night-time dimming, increasing the need to ensure that the road markings remain visible.
