摘要

At least four contractors are in the running for a much-delayed £64 million deal to increase traffic capacity on the A1 Western Bypass in Gateshead. Tenders were due back to the Highways Agency on 28 February and contractors expected to return bids include BAM Nuttall, Carillion, Costain and Morgan Sindall. Northern Irish outfit Lagan are also expected to be in the mix too. The existing A1 Gateshead-Newcastle Western Bypass is a 25km section of predominantly two-lane dual carriageway that is one of the most congested highway links in the North East region.
