While the government is spending millions on creating "smart motorways", where traffic flow is constantly monitored and variable speed limits are set accordingly, little attention seems to be paid to improve traffic flow in urban areas. Yet a lot could be done using existing information and infrastructure, writes the founder and director of telematics consultancy IQConsult, Laszlo Heckenast.
