Signs should be simple to understand, with a clear and unambiguous instruction: keep off the grass; pull only in an emergency. On that basis, a sign that warns of a 'low bridge ahead' should be, one would have thought, a similarly easy instruction to obey. And to a degree you'd be right. A series of six full matrix Variable Message Signs (VMS) installed to the approach of Thurlow Park Bridge in South London has had a dramatic impact in reducing collisions. The bridge had become notorious and was constantly being closed. At one point the bridge was being hit on average almost twice a month, causing more than 218 hours of delays to Southern and Thameslink passengers over the 12-month period to July 2016.
