Telford & Wrekin is a unitary Council located in the West Midlands, sandwiched between Wolverhampton, the Black Country and the County Town of Shrewsbury. The main urban area, Telford, is a former new town, developed in the 1960's and 70's as an overspill for many of the city areas such as Birmingham and Liverpool. The borough comprises of an interesting mix of both rural and urban areas and old and new, with the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, located in the South. Being a new town, Telford was designed for the car. This led to a high capacity road network and even with plans to continue to grow the population from its current 170,000 to 200,000 by 2031, along with the construction of 17,500 new homes, congestion in the area remains relatively low. The area benefits from good air quality compared to the air quality issues currently suffered by many city and town areas across the country.
