This month, something different. A complete system put together by an importer: a combination of brands that are rarely reviewed despite enjoying legendary reputations. The only make I specified was Spectral. The rest I left to RT Services' main man, Robert Purnell. He knew I'd bought a secondhand Spectral DMC-12 pre-amp from a 'civilian' who was upgrading to a DMC-30S. Moreover, he knew I'd auditioned that purchase using the owner's Accuphase DP-85 multi-format digital player. Robert arrived with the Accuphase DP-67 CD player, the entry level Spectral DMC-15 line-only pre-amp and DMA-100S power amplifier and a pair of entry-level Princess speakers from Peak Consult International (PCI). Interconnects and power leads were Siltech and Spectral. No mains processing equipment was used, though the system was powered from a dedicated 30A spur into my living room through unmodified wall sockets. Everything was sited on Robert's elegant prototype slate and stainless-steel equipment rack. The whole setup was put together in under 30 minutes. Hassle-free, tweak-free, no fuss, no posturing and no 'black-art'. The Princess speakers are immaculately crafted two-unit bookshelf-sized cabinets on elegant stands. The Spectrals are full-width low-height units taking up little space and the Accuphase is state-of-the-art engineering in an immaculate single-box.
