Compared to the brutal engineering of Denon's massive flagship DVD player, Pioneer's range-topping universal model looks positively understated. At £800, the sleek DV-989AVi is also considerably more affordable, though not as lightweight as its appearance might suggest. Within its triple-skinned, 10kg chassis is a raft of technology, including both HDMI v1.1 and two iLINK digital connections to support uncompressed, multichannel audio and HDCP-encrypted digital video. It also makes the perfect partner for Pioneer's impressive VSX-AX4AVi AV amplifier (AudioVision, Feb '06) which also supports the same CD, Dolby/OTS bitstream, DVD-A and SACD formats through the common iLINK connection.
