According to some pundits, it's the Holy Grail of (super) HD. But while progressive 1080-line video certainly represents the height of the AV numbers game, there's precious little hardware operating at this level and even less native source material. Nevertheless, this has not stopped Marantz from outperforming Denon with a DVD player that scales beyond 1080i to a full 1080p [see 'The Numbers Game' panel, p52]. Marantz has supercharged its DV9500 (AVTech, Sept 2005) with the latest 10-bit video sealer from Anchor Bay Technologies to produce this £1500 DV9600, but as Denon's flagship DVD-A1XV also uses the same technology, I expect a Mk II upgrade to appear sometime soon.
