I am sure I'm far from alone among HFN's readership when I recall that my very first hi-fi system - although I hesitate to call it that now - was headphone-based. The reasons for choosing headphones in preference to speakers were numerous: they were cheaper; they would allow me to listen to music whenever and at whatever volume I liked (an important factor at boarding school); and they could just about be carried together with a BSR McDonald MP60 turntable, Goldring G850 cartridge and Trio KA-forgotten amp on the tube from Tottenham Court Road back to Charing Cross and the awaiting school train.
