The Tokyo Quartet was founded in 1969, and its first major recording project was a fine Bartok cycle for DC: still available as CDs or download. Later on they made their first complete Beethoven set for RCA and, still with two founder members, are reworking these for Harmonia Mundi - excellent early/middle period sets have already appeared, and now we await the late quartets. The engineers have achieved superbly rich textures for these transitional works, allowing us to listen in to a deep, three-dimensional hall acoustic (the recordings were done in the more often unresponsive NY Academy of Arts). Highly rewarding and a good way to begin listening to Beethoven's music for string quartet.
