You hold in your hand the longest serving and, arguably, the most respected high-end hi-fi magazine in the world. When first published in 1956 - two years before the introduction of the stereo LP - Hi-Fi News carried little notion of the sublime and esoteric audio equipment that would evolve in the decades ahead. Nevertheless those early, text-heavy issues set the foundation for our 21 st-century magazine with in-depth articles on important musicians and (largely classical) performances of the day alongside features that cut to the heart of developments in audio engineering. The concept of subjective reviewing would need to wait another 20 years but from the outset, Hi-Fi News has endeavoured to bring its readers the fullest possible picture of the audio scene.
