On The Real Side, last year's 70th birthday celebration, turned out to be Hubbard's final recording for Blue Note. Now, the label looks back with these live tracks from December 1969, all previously unreleased except a long and lazy 'Body and Soul'. This and the more abstract 'Space Track' were recorded in Germany and hint at the homogenised sound quality that's all too familiar from Sonny Lester-produced reissues. There's a fresher, more natural sound on tracks from the Festival Hall, and the livelier Colston Hall. Pianist Jake Hanna and bassist Ron Carter hadn't worked regularly with Hubbard but the constantly sparkling rapport between the trumpeter and drummer Louis Hayes keeps the music alive, and kicking too.
