When an album attains the No 34 position in Rolling Stone's Top 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, reviews are academic. Back in 1968, this hit listeners like a breath of fresh, country air, none knowing that it would create or expand on myriad genres, including roots music, retro rock and even alt-country decades later. Although he didn't play on it, Bob Dylan's influence is all over this, from the cover art to a few compositions, but that shouldn't diminish the achievement of a group of musicians who simply showed more respect for Americana than any predominantly Canadian bunch of players should do.
