Shostakovich's last, cryptic symphony - with its Rossini and Wagner quotations - was immediately recorded (1972) by the composer's son Maxim and Eugene Ormandy. Now the dust has settled and the work's autobiographic details are clearer, time for Pletnev and his fine orchestra (principal violin and cello outstanding), whose version has immaculate clarity. As filler, he's chosen excerpts from incidental music to two staged versions of Hamlet, 1932/54 (not the later film with Smoktunovsky), and if it is difficult to relate what we hear to Shakespeare's tragedy that is because the earlier avant-garde production was full of parodying elements.
