In 1969, with the blues revival no longer a novelty, any surviving fathers of the genre were finally afforded the respect that eluded them. Instead of earnest indie record labels, the majors came calling, so this intriguing set appeared on Capitol; that played no small part in getting it noticed more than, say, a release on Delmark. The title was ironic: although McDowell, whose 'You Gotta Move' (also attributed to Rev. Gary Davis) was covered by the Rolling Stones, championed rural, unplugged blues, here he adds a rhythm section and demonstrates slide guitar that - unfortunately for him - rocks like the devil.
