The collection of 14 settings published posthumously as Schubert's 'Swan song' makes an ideal introduction to the composer's many Lieder (Fischer-Dieskau's first EMI LP recording was mine). The scope of these songs is wide and Ian Bostridge has a new Schubert partner, after Julius Drake and Leif Ove Andsnes, in Antonio Pappano whose accompaniments are flexible and full of character.
