Maybe not so new, as all but one of the sidemen here also played on Golson's last studio recording. Terminal 7 in 2004, which the sax legend made after his appearance in Steven Spielberg's movie The Terminal. Making it a new sextet, or The New Jazztet, is the addition of trombonist Steve Davis, blending beautifully with Eddie Henderson's always-engaging trumpet. There's one slyly persuasive guest vocal from Al Jarreau, on one of Colson's own great catalogue of jazz standards, 'Whisper Not'. And whether he's reinventing Chopin in 'L'Adieu' or zipping almost as fast as ever through his jaunty 'Gypsy Jingle Jangle', it's hard to believe Golson just celebrated his 80th birthday. We should celebrate it too.
