The British Thomson Houston Company Ltd was established in the UK in 1896 as a subsidiary of General Electric USA. In 1928 BTH took over Edison Swan and Metropolitan-Vickers, creating a vast research and manufacturing facility. In a 1929 sales brochure, a wide range of gramophone motors, tonearms, pick-ups, microphones, loudspeakers and transformers were shown. The Junior RK and Senior RK drive units listed were pioneering moving-coil speakers based on the original American Rice-Kellog design. The Junior RK had a 6in cone and could be ordered with three versions of field coil for use on 6, 100-125 or 200-250 volts. Its larger brother, the Senior RK had a 10in cone and energised its field coil with a built-in valve-rectified power supply. The Junior sold for ￡6.6.0d and the Senior sold for ￡11.10s.0d, which equates to approximately four weeks' wages in today's money!
