The Tokyo Quartet was founded in 1969 at the Juilliard School, and its first major recording project was a fine Bartok cycle for DC. Later on they made their first complete Beethoven set for RCA (far superior to the lauded Takacs/Hyperion CDs) and are reworking these for Harmonia Mundi. Excellent early/middle period sets have already appeared, and now we await the late quartets. The engineers have achieved superbly rich textures for these transitional works, allowing us to listen in to a deep, three-dimensional hall acoustic (in fact the more often unresponsive NY Academy of Arts). Highly rewarding.
