Budget Bliss

Through the '50s and '60s it was taken for granted in hi-fi circles that the biggest influence on an audio system's sound quality was the loudspeaker. Then a guy selling turntables in the '70s preached a 'front-end-first' philosophy, making a logical point that in any reproductive (audioj chain the amplifier could do nothing other than merely amplify the information that is fed into it, the loudspeaker subsequently reproducing the (amplified) information, for better or worse. What with home computing being in its infancy at the time, the phrase 'garbage in, garbage out' was seized upon by audio scribes, myself included, and the guy who was selling record players sold a lot of them.
