I regularly read about music downloads killing CD sales. It's hardly a great surprise given that the sound quality of some CDs I have purchased recently are a disgrace. I have broad tastes, from Neil Diamond to Iron Maiden and everything in between. I've spent a large sum on a Cairn Fog3 CD player, 4810 amplifier and Monitor Audio P1100 speakers. With a good recording my jaw drops; with many others my teeth grind. I now find myself buying music based on magazine reviews and listening to genres I wouldn't normally entertain just to get a decent sound. Mainstream titles are too much of a gamble. It's sad to look forward to a new release only to find it makes your ears bleed and actually sounds more enjoyable compressed and loaded onto my iPod. Downloads aside, from an audiophile perspective I sometimes feel CD is doing a fine job of killing itself. Thank God I still have my vinyl collection to keep me sane.
