The Coliseum Theatre in London usually stages operas but occasionally does a Broadway musical. Leonard Bernstein's On the Town was very obviously, and successfully, amplified. The rotten flop show Kismet was too. The recently staged Bernstein's Candide is a hybrid, part-opera and part-musical. I just couldn't be sure who and what was amplified, and when. The next day Nick Lidster of Autograph, the British company which handles the sound for most West End musicals, explained: 'Everything in Candide was amplified, with 48 radio mics on the cast, the mics being very well hidden mainly in hair and wigs. The orchestra was miked too, mostly in sections, but a few instruments, such as the harp were close-miked. The speakers - LDS 800 ribbon speakers from Sweden - were hidden in "browned out" stacks at each side of the stage, with extra units feeding the balcony.'
