There is only one good reason to switch off FM radio: to save broadcasters the cost of simulcasting programmes in two formats, DAB and FM. The broadcasters' attempts at pushing the government into setting a date for FM switch-off are looking increasingly desperate and clumsy. First we had the Analogue Amnesty, with trade-in offers for portable FM radios that were then to be shipped off to remote villages in impoverished countries. No-one had thought about how the villagers would use them, with no mains power and no money for expensive batteries.
