After ten trio albums, the pianist assembled a stellar quartet for Nuance in 2009, with Randy Brecker, George Mraz and drummer Antony Pinciotti. It was Pinciotti who suggested the tenor sax of Bill McHenry and the free-breathing bass sound of Omer Avital for her next quartet project. McHenry plays on only five of the 11 numbers, but hits an appealing lyrical vein in 'Peace,' while Avital switches to oud on the 'Dance Of The Rain,' his middle-eastern heritage also pervading an expansion of 'Paint It Black.' Once again, along with striking originals, Arriale successfully re-imagines popular tunes as jazz in an album that's often brilliant, always absorbing.
