Not long ago most cities in the UK could boast a number of high street shops dedicated to selling CDs. These are now a thing of the past. The reasons are many, the popularity of music downloads being just one, and while there is still demand for those silver discs this is falling on a yearly basis. The same can't be said for LP records. In the US, where 40% of the world's music sales are conducted, the dollar value of vinyl LP sales rose by 50% between 2009 and 2010, from $60m to a remarkable $90m. As for CD, DVD and music videos, these saw a drop in sales overall of 20% for the same period.
