ARC AM rDAC (￡375)

From a technical standpoint there is much to commend the rDAC which delivers a very 'clean' performance for the price. From the top, our rDAC shone brightly with its 2.3V maximum output, wide 109dB A-wtd S/N ratio, usefully low 46ohm output impedance and very uniform 0.002% distortion from 1 kHz-20kHz. This latter feature is especially important from a musical perspective because it maintains a consistent level of 'color' from the electronics through the all-important mid and treble. While distortion rises at low bass frequencies to 0.016%/20Hz, Arcam should nevertheless be congratulated for maintaining this performance, and these figures, across both S/PDIF and USB interfaces - a unique feat among the current crop of budget USB DACs and thanks largely to its implementation of dCS's asynchronous USB interface.
