McINTOSH C50 PREAMP (￡6995)

Tested through balanced analogue, digital S/PDIF and USB inputs, Mclntosh's C50 emerges as a more spectacular analogue preamp than outboard DAC. As the former it is truly superb, offering a full 93dB A-wtd S/N ratio (re. OdBV for 500mV in), +14.9dB gain, a huge 10V input overload margin and equally substantial 18V balanced output. Distortion is so low as to stretch the limits of measurement. In fact the C50's distortion is over 10×lower than Mclntosh specifies in its literature [black trace, Graph 1 below] bottoming out at 0.00006% and only reaching 0.0006% at an ultrasonic 40kHz.
