VPI proprietors Harry and Sheila Weisfeld produced their first JMW Memorial tonearm in 1996, its name a tribute to their son Jonathan who was tragically killed in an accident the previous year. For every Memorial arm sold VPI makes charitable donations to worthwhile causes, such as music and creative arts societies in local schools. Where many unipivots rely on twisting the counterweight to achieve correct azimuth, the JMW features an azimuth ring with fixed weights on either side, positioned at the bottom of the bearing housing so that its mass is below the pivot point. It is simply rotated and locked into position with an Allen screw. The arm's headshell has a V-shaped notch cut across it: VPI supplies a long thin rod to sit in this notch when setting up so you can see clearly whether or not the headshell is parallel with the record's surface.
