Immediately sold out, the orchestra's concert at the intimate Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford, on 1st of May 2010, had the critics searching for superlatives, particularly for the Brahms. The young American cellist (28) had made her Berlin debut in this concerto earlier that week, and is now signed to DC. But she lacks du Pre's passionate intensity and her 'soulful' facial expression makes depressing viewing in close-up. Barenboim's sober manner gives little away, yet the Symphony does indeed have something very special about it, with not a trace of routine, familiarity notwithstanding.
