Staier prefaces the Beethoven variations with ten selected from others who took up the commission from Diabelli (the Schubert is head and shoulders above the rest). That is not a recording precedent, but his choice of a fortepiano is more interesting. Staier plays one modelled after a Conrad Graf with a characterful metallic timbre; he also uses 'exotic pedal1 options in three variations.
