This 1963 Geneva Hall recording is one of two must-have couplings of these two song-cycles; the other is with Dame Janet Baker and the NPO under Sir John Barbirolli [ASD2444] - a good candidate for reissue on Testament or Hi-Q. Crespin herself may have hated the microphone - 'mon cher cauchemare [nightmare]' - but she's singing in her native tongue and has the advantage of authentically styled accompaniments with Ansermet. This is one of those Deccas with fabulous depth imagery; the new pressing has a tighter focus on voice but the 'Jubilee' reissue was almost as good.
