This 2008 Festival Hall performance was given one month after Dohnanyi's Philharmonia appointment as Honorary Conductor for Life. The brass playing is particularly impressive, powerful and clean, and recording balances are exemplary. But it's not a reading to persuade those with an antipathy to Bruckner: Dohnanyi doesn't gloss over the pauses, repetitive writing, etc, although his pacing is flexible. Above all, the finale makes very good sense - not always so. Newcomers would find Haitink [LSO Live] more accessible, even though he takes 5m longer overall. Philip Stokes was sound engineer on both occasions.
