For me, this is Marin Alsop's most attractive Naxos recording so far. It may not ultimately acquire the status of the Fricsay, Karajan, Solti or Reiner couplings, but there is fresh inner detail to relish and a warm distinctive sound (Meyerhoff Hall, Baltimore). Alsop says American audiences still find Bartdk 'difficult' but that ought not to apply here. The 'Elegia' is the high point of her Concerto for Orchestra and the 'Intermezzo' more jolly than sardonic. Perhaps overall there's a necessary layer of severity missing and the finale in MSPC hasn't the cumulative drive found in Karajan's three recordings, but a firm recommendation.
