April saw Barenboim and his Staatskapelle Orchestra return to the South Bank to perform Bruckner's last three symphonies to capacity houses. This live Seventh was from the Berlin Philharmonie in June 2010, and is his third recording of the work. The orchestra has a distinctive character: not to all tastes, but their playing is at the highest level. Yet Barenboim's control stands between the music and the listener: it's more a lecture on the piece. The climax of the Adagio - with cymbal clash - must be the loudest on record.
