Schooldays summers were always warm and sunny. Christmas was all clean snow. And hi-fi shows have always been a wonderful way to listen and learn from experts. Right? Not entirely, of course. But if you telescope time, and mentally edit out the bad experiences - like standing in the winter rain for half an hour while the driver of a Heathrow hotel courtesy bus snoozed in the warm, behind firmly closed doors - it saddens me to remember what we have lost to the modern gadget shows where violent computer games, smartphones and iPod docks are the main attraction.
