The pairing of Motorhead with Vic Maile as producer was a last-minute decision but it turned out to be a marriage made in heaven. On their previous two albums the trio had worked with legendary Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller, but his increasing dependence on heroin had made him unreliable. Maile had spent much of the 1960s engineering some of the era's hardest-rocking bands, including The Kinks, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, but is most often associated with The Who's Live At Leeds, reckoned by many to be the greatest live album of all time, in no small measure because of Maile's contributions.
