A professor of engineering at the Tokyo State University, Dr Noburu Tominari started the Dynavector company in 1975. He developed the first successful high-output moving-coil cartridge, the ancestor of today's Dynavector 10X5 model. Dr Tominari's next cartridge innovation came with the first of the Karat series in 1980. Most cartridges then, as now, used a diamond stylus mounted on a metal cantilever 5mm or more long, but in this design the cantilever was shortened to 2.5mm and made of solid diamond or ruby.
