LAB REPORT: SOUNDSMXTH BOHEME-M (£545)

Our Boheme was supplied in 'medium compliance' guise (22cu) although it proved somewhat 'stiffer' at 13cu (vertical) that it did at 23cu (lateral). The latter is still rather too high for a medium/high effective mass tonearm like the SME V as the overall resonant frequency is pushed down to around 8Hz but, fortunately, the 10dB/14dB resonances are reasonably well damped. The 1.3g downforce is reminiscent of the high compliance Shures of yore but the Boheme-M still tracked up to 75um and held distortion to 1.5% (both channels) on the 300Hz test track up to +15dB (re. 5cm/sec). However, upping bias compensation to around 1.8g and the downforce to 1.4g could not keep the exquisite stylus in secure contact with the groove wall at the top +18dB groove modulation.
