Posthumous releases are now memorialising the great drummer Paul Motian, who died in November 2011. In January came Further Explorations, recorded live with Chick Corea and Eddie Gomez in 2010. Now we have the last ECM studio recording to feature Motian, made in Sept '09, a couple of months before Live At Birdland with Konitz, Mehldau and Haden. But Sunrise was a reunion too, as Motian had been in the Tokyo-born pianist's Tethered Moon group in the 1990s. You may love or hate Kikuchi's notorious vocal noises as he plays, often sounding like a horn player in the distance. But the music is arrestingly sparky, and Kikuchi is clearly still exploring too.
