With so many delightful ideas and touches of orchestration throughout, in places not unlike The Nutcracker, it's odd that conductors used to isolate just the final Theme and Variations movement in the Tchaikovsky orchestral suite. Stravinsky freely borrowed from other composers and in The Fairy's Kiss took motifs from the smaller works of Tchaikovsky: the Divertimento is a cut reworking from the ballet for Ida Rubinstein (Paris, 1928). A 2006 SACD, these recordings were made in Moscow even earlier - well before Jurowski's LPO appointment but already showing his strong-willed, individual approach. The Tchaikovsky Scherzo is taken at quite a lick! Appropriately, he has the violins seated antiphonally. The orchestral tone-colours are pleasing but the sound is recessed in too reberberant an acoustic.
