Bibb's notes reveal that this ever-youthful-looking bluesman is just turned 60. And that his relationship with Opus 3 goes back 35 years. And yet this rootsy, almost-entirely-unplugged set - recorded during 2005-2011 - sounds as fresh as the first release he delivered on Opus back in '77. It is not a album of surprises, but then it shouldn't be, as Bibb is honouring a tradition. What makes it noteworthy is the sheer presence of beautifully recorded performances from the heart. A mix of originals and folk/blues standards like 'John Henry' and 'Stagger Lee', it's like a soak in a bath full of aromatic salts. This SACD should come with a glass of Maker's Mark.
