If you asked the man in the street to name the best British folk-rock album ever made, the chances are he'd nominate Fairport Convention's Liege And Lief (more of which later). For my money, though, it doesn't get much better than Richard and Linda Thompson's I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight [Simply Vinyl, 180g], the 1974 Island release where ex-Fairport guitarist Thompson expands his folk-rooted origins into rockier territory across a series of finely-honed original compositions, his wife Linda providing a perfect counter-balance. The poised fragility of her vocal delivery makes her the ideal interpreter of Richard's pithy social commentaries and sad personal vignettes.
