While the body of Hi-Fi News is traditionally an obituary-free zone, there is no way that the passing of William Z Johnson can be marked with less than a page. Although his achievements are more tightly focused than those of another giant we lost in 2011 -the astonishing EdgarVillchur- his impact within the audiophile community must never be undervalued. For it was Johnson and Audio Research, more than any other manufacturer (and founder), who 'saved' valve electronics. Taking tubes forward Yes, another typically brash Kessler statement, some might say, especially those who also make post-transistor era valve gear, and who would like to wrest the crown from Johnson. But history- at least, that which hasn't been 'revised' by the politically correct and/ or corrupt - shows that, in 1970, valve amplifier manufacturing had trickled to an insignificant level of legacy products. For the most part the valve amp was obsolete.
