Enigmatic in quoting from Wagner, Rossini and the composer's earlier music, Shostakovich's last symphony is nonetheless one of his most accessible and it's certainly thought-provoking. Haitink's 1979 LPO recording in his Decca cycle was of 'audiophile' quality but is now part of a boxed CD set and sounds less good in digital remastering. This new version is edited from four 2010 concert performances to meticulous effect. There is less warmth now - the earlier finale had hints of optimism - and the Adagio is forbiddingly bleak. But every strand of instrumental colour is sharp in focus.
