How do I measure my own music?

I read Jim Lesurf's column entitled 'Master or LP transfer' in which he said that he used equipment to measure digital compression. What kit would I need to do the same test? And what equipment would I need, to look at waveforms from vinyl? I want to be able to identify the poor recordings in my music collection.Jim Lesurf replies: The analysis process I use can only be done on audio in 'digital' form, that is, as an LPCM Wave file. I'll explain that first and then deal with how to get a digital version from vinyl.For the comparisons in my 'Master or LP transfer' column I ripped the required tracks from CDs using my computer and the cdparanoia program. There are various alternatives to cdparanoia, for example Exact Audio Copy (EAC). Just use the program you prefer, though I can't guarantee that every combination of computer optical drive and ripping software will give perfect results.
